What's the best all-around engine for off-roading? Is it the venerable Chevy 350 small-block, the LS-1 Vortec V-8s, or neither? AMC 304 or 401?

The Chevy small-block, whether the original or the Gen-III or IV, simply dominates. It's relatively lightweight, compact, can make a lot of power, and there are a gazillion aftermarket parts for them. It's no mystery why it's so popular.

Geeze.. only GM options? Come on now!
You guys are going to hate *** BUT...
22re. Best Off-Road Engine Ever.
This practicly indestructable Toyota 4-Banger has proven its self time and time and time again, in everything from Rock Buggies to Race Trucks.
As with everything in offroading gearing is key, and with the right gearig this engine can do anything.

I'm running a 22r now and it's the best engine I've ever run and I've owned them all.

if you're going to go that route the why not just go for the 572 crate motor??? then there's a marine engine i've heard of that can be bored to over 600 cubic inches...
