302 is cool and all, and it's the engine of choice for my truck... but I wouldn't call it the best 'all around'. In stock form they are kinda just... blah...

And how much horsepower does it make? 45? Gearing can only make up so much so for the best all around engine I would have to go with not the Hercules.

I'm a trader and swapper I've had just about every make and model engine once or twice. The V8 engines sound is so powerful and most drivers get carried away and over rev them in a bog hole. Then its time to rebuild or replace, that sucks! 4cyl guys are wright about weight to power ratio,a built 22r in a yota pu is fun all day. But overload it with too much weight and dont pay attention to temp gauge then goes head gasket or head/block. The best bank for your buck is Inline 6 6=8 FORD 300 or Chevy 250 both are great engines. Both love to be run hard, throw in a manual trans and they're unstopable (in most mud holes or hills or trails) tall and skinny tires work best with these torquey SOB's. Only drawback they sound like tractors when you bust the exhaust loose on a stump, man that sucks. MY vote L6 all the way!

I'll agree partially... thinking about it now the Inline 6 might just be the best all around off-road engine... but not the one you are thinking of.
I'm going to cast a vote for the Jeep 4.0 I6. I don't know why I didn't think of this sooner.

Buick 225 Dauntless Tons of torque, light weight, loves to run hard, and the odd fire sounds awesome with some side pipes!
