What do you guys think of the '07 Silverado & Sierra? Do you think GM hit a home-run, or do you think it's got the goods to hang with the F-150 and Titan? What did they do right, and what could they have done better?

its okay i guess. it looks too "new" and the bed needs to be longer and the whole thing is just too rounded. i personally would not spend the 30 or so grand. but do i think it could hang with the fords?...um yeah! everyone knows that chevy is better than ford!

I'm sure you might have some people that disagree with you! ;-) The F-150 is a nice ride, but too heavy, and a little underpowered, even with the 5.4. Supposedly they're going to pump it up next year. Should be interesting.

I was at the Detroit auto show 3-4 years ago and saw the "Cheyenne" up close. It was a giant step in the right direction albeit from a company that ususally places these gussied up veh's on display primarily for press that they never intend to make. That truck had the potential to topple the entire p/u market for a decade or more. It had an aluminum frame, 35" tires, independent rear w/steer, and with an aero shape and low load tailgate. I was prepared to sell my diesel '02 to get this truck. It was that emotionally captivating. The '07 Silverado and Sierra are a total departure from the Cheyenne which makes the argument for obtaining press at the show more valid. They never intended to change the Silverado's appearance from its current form which, as usual, is a shame. The look is inane without anything stylish about it. The new ones appear every bit as much as the rush to market that they are.  Without the improved interior they were dead in the water, so that was obvious.  The F-150 is so square, heavy and underpowered that the Chevy will compete with the Ford's weakness instead of just leaving the segment behind. My '02 was difficult to implement with 35's due to the Chevy's lousy wheel openings which still look restrictive on the new truck. Getting rid of the torsion bars was another obvious improvement from an antique suspension.  The Chevy's were somewhat lighter than their competition and with Ford's problems with it's new 6 liter diesel, Chevy had the opportunity to recover some of their customers with a better executed design (read:Cheyenne).  The Titan is another ugly truck with an ugly interior. Again, Chevy had a shot to quell the Japanese surge with their ungainly attempt to guess what American drivers want.  So it's not a "homerun" but rather an evolutionary reaction to a market that sees a declining GM share. I can't keep feeling that GM thinks buyers will will buy anything and also cannot discern their makeup jobs on products. All things considered, I hope they sell well as GM's health is critical to this country's economy. But at the same time I would hope GM can hire people who can make the difference and replace those who cannot.

Well, I think the revolutionary/evolutionary debate is one that always faces the designers and engineers of full-size trucks. It's a very traditional market in a lot of ways. Radical change turns off a lot of those buyers, so that's why they probably "played it safe" with the '07 re-design. I can't believe they're still offering the old 4.3 pushrod V-6. It was a good enough motor in its day, but enough already! Time for a new base engine. I think GM has the potential to hit a home run with their new half-ton diesel they supposedly have in development, but I know Ford's working on one as well. I think whoever gets to the market first will have an edge.
