It depends on what kind of off-roading you plan to do. I'd maybe do a mild 2-3 inch lift, maybe an intake and/or exhaust. Spray-coat the bed, maybe even spray-coat the interior floor. Ask rngprerunner. He's a hard-core Ranger guy, he could probably give you some good advice.

The smallest lift he could do would be a 3" body lift. For your truck the only options for lift are 4" Superlift, 4" Trailmaster, 5" RCD, 3" PA Body.
But you don't want to lift it so doesn't matter.
I would do shocks next. Procomp ES-9000's are a good offroad shock. Or even better would be a nice set of Bilstiens. You can get the Bilstiens from the FX4 L2 from your dealer for a decent price and they work awesome! Or you can step it up to 7100 resivour shocks, but that takes some fab work.
Do you have a limited slip? A nice limited slip or locker in the rear will make a world of difference.
Being an XLT you have carpet right? So coating the interior is out of the question, and I wouldn't recommend it anyway. A nice spray in bed liner, or some off-road lights would really spruce it up.
So yea, your options are pretty much limit less. My truck is a DD too and look at it! LOL
