I hope this doesn't start a flame war, but I would like your opinions. We are looking at ordering an Earthroamer 4X4 Class C RV. This year the builder is offering a Ford F550 platform as standard, with the new Dodge 5000 platform as a custom option. I've heard some warnings about the Ford diesel, and the Dodge is using the Cummins diesel. I'm looking for pros and cons on the two platforms, particularly in the off-road arena.

I used to be a service advisor for both Ford and Dodge and I can whole heartedly recommend the Cummins diesel to you over any Ford unit. I have heard their newer diesels are more reliable than the 6.0 (avoid that at all costs!) but I am still a little reticent to trust newer Ford diesels. As for off-road, the best motor for any dirt road excursion is one that will bring you back to the paved road.

Yeah, the 6.0 Ford is trouble. 6.4 is supposedly a little better, but I think the Cummins would probably give you better long-term reliability.

Cummins makes a good engine, but Ford makes a good Truck... think about that one...

Explain your reason for saying ford builds a better truck than dogde. Dogde has really stepped up their game in these newer trucks, they have great brakes, fully boxed frames, strong solid axles, front coilovers, reliable and strong motors and now transmissions and decent looks.

Is the 6.0 really as unreliable as you guys are saying? I see 95% of the super dutys on the street with 6.0 diesels. WHat kind of problems do they have?

Seems that the problems lie in the fuel system. My work involves a 2006 F-450 ambulance with the 6.0. What a piece of crap! Its ALWAYS in the shop and costing the county tons of money.
