Well i have always been a jeep guy. Straight axle all the way mud and rockcrawling. well yeah thats fun and all but i cant ignore the fact that i have a lead foot and like going fast... a lot. Im not much into on street speed though. I have always loved watching offroad and desert racing, and i have decided that i want to build my own toy.

I have researched and i want to go with a ford ranger as my base. the main question that i have is probably one of great controversy for offroad racing. I-beams or A arm type suspension. im probably opening up a big can of worms with this one but if you could start from scratch which way would you go. so i know that beams are run in ranger years up to 97 and A arms took over from there. i would like to get as new as a vehicle as possible to start with. So i would like to get some input on what is considered a better platform. Thanks in advance.

Yup, big can 'o worms... lol

It's personal preference.

Beams can be cheaper to build, but they have more problems like camber change and bump steer.

A-Arms cost slightly more and yield slightly less travel, but the travel is 'cleaner'.

The comes the fact that an I-Beam truck hasn't been build for 11 years now. So the newest truck you could get is 11 years old where with A-Arm you can get anything from 98-08 and  build it.

Personally I like A-Arms. I prefer their ride characteristics, handling, and the fact that the trucks arn't too old so stupid stuff like the A/C works, the engine and trans arn't totally worn out, and other small things like that.

So my vote, Arms.

yea this is pretty much what i was thinking. im looking to get a 2wd. And obviously a newer model year is gonna be much more reliable and in better condition, less milage etc. thanks for the input 4x4... so is that your truck in your avatar, what kind of setup are you running. I have looked at camburg and dixon bros. i really like both of the systems they have.

Yes, that is my truck. You can also pick up this months issue of Off-Road Magazine to see part two of the rear suspension build.

I am running the Dixon Brothers kit on the front of my truck and absolutely love it! But you won't be disappointed with Camburg either, both are top quality products!
