I am looking for a Ford differential to fit a 95 Ford Ranger 2wd. it is a stock diff right now and i am looking to put 31/10.50/15 tires on and am looking for the cheapest way to put 4:10 in the back. this is going to be mainly a street driver. Does anyone know if there is a diff swap from an Explorer or similar Ranger to lower the ratio in the rear that i can pick up from a salvage yard ?? this is a low budget driver so i dont want to bust the bank
Thanks

What engine do you have? Or  more importantly, if you know it, what rear axle? Is it the 7.5 or 8.8?

Explorer 8.8's will work, but finding a 4.10 will be hard, though they did exist. All Explorer 8.8's have 31 spline axle shafts and larger diameter axle tubes. Explorer 8.8 are also great because '96 + have disk brakes. Only down side to an Ex axle is that they are 1 1/2" wider than a stock Ranger axle.

You're best bet to find a stock axle with 4.10's is going to be out of a Ranger Edge or 4x4 with the 4.0. While 3.73 and 3.55 will be the most common, 4.10 was an option for many many years, and still is in fact.

Another option is to find the rear axle out an FX4 L2. These are the correct width for a Ranger, but have the 31 spline axles and 4.10 gearing. They also come with the Torsen limited slip. But as with the 4.10 Explorer axle they are extremely hard to find.

What engine do you have anyway? And what gearing now? For 31's there is a chance you will be fine with what you have stock...

My Dad has a '95 2WD Ranger with a 4.0L V-6, it has the Splash Sport suspension, and has an 8.8 rear in the back. 4x4 Rangers usually had either 3.73 or 4.10 gears in the back. Chek out '93-'97 Rangers, see if you can find one with an 8.8 in the yard.

To check if it's an 8.8, just use a ruler on the rear cover. The 8.8 housing height will be pretty big to handle the carrier, a 7.5 rear in a 4 cylinder Ranger will have a much smaller case diameter.

You can ID the axle by looking at the tag that is on the rear diff its self.

It will say something like...

88 4 10
88 3L73
75 3 55
ect...

The first two numbers are what the axle is, 8.8 or 7.5. The second set of numbers are the gear ratio and weather or not it has a limited slip. For example 4 10 would be 4.10 gears with an open carrier, while 4L10 would be 4.10 gears with a limited slip.

Make sense?
