Starter Issues

I've got a 91 chevy fullsize 4x4, i've recently taken it through a rather deep water hole, about 6 foot or so, and soaked the starter, it almost froze up, i shut the truck off and it wouldn't start again, so i had to tap the starter, i have to tap it the next few times i wanted to start it, but that went away and now the starter works just fine, i don't even have to turn the key on and off a couple times.
I wanted to know how to avoid that kind of problme, i watch a lot of mudding vidoes, and i see people going through lots of water all the time, and i wanted to know if there was any way to keep your starter dry and keep the water out, since most people in those vidoes don't seem to have any problems, or are they just good friends with the guy at the parts counter (you know what i mean haha)
I know that with a distributor you can spray just some regular paint on the tips, and take a razor and clean off the very tops to avoid stalling the engine from the distuributor getting soaked, is there some way like that to keep your starter from freezing up?
Thanks

Eh, you know I don't think I have ever seen anything for protecting the starter. I think some people just get lucky, and some don't. Maybe fab up some sort of splash shield for it to direct the water/mud away...
