My 18 year old son and I are new to off-road build ups and all things Jeep.  What year Jeep makes a good platform for a build up?  Older/cheaper starting point the better.

It's all going to depend on your budget. Although I'm a Toyota guy, I'll happily admit that Jeep have been turning out top notch offroaders for years.  My advice (for what it's worth) it to buy the cleanest, lowest millage jeep you can, the latest model you can and go from there.  The tendency will be to buy one that's already got a few of the mods you want, but your much better served starting from scratch with a reliable rig.

What do you want to do with it? And what's your budget?

I would suggest an early 90's XJ, not knowing anything else. Tell us more and we can narrow it down to something that will serve you well in exactly what you want to do.

Depending on what you wanna do and what your budget is i would say if your looking for a jeep to handle anything you should including bad weather conditions go with a cherokee which is what i did but if you're looking for a jeep for good weather conditions and beach type stuff go with a wrangler definitly
