Long Travel does exactly what it says, it increases the wheel travel of your suspension system allowing for a smoother more controlled ride over harsh terrain.

That's the simple explanation anyway.

And yes, it's worth it.

Stock VW suspension was designed over 60 years ago to make an affordable people mover, not to go through the desert or over the sand dunes at 60+ MPH. You'll beat up the buggy and yourself and maybe even crash due to poor handling. If you want the car to work spend as much as you can afford on long travel. If you're on a budget, start in the back. With a VW type rail that's where everything happens. The front is important too but there's not usually much weight up there and no transaxle components to hurt.
