The story: I decided to give the Wrangler a rest and bought a Ford Ranger for a little pre-runner action. The engine is a little weak, so I am going to swap it with a 2.3L that I have in a wrecked pickup that has been sitting since about 2004 or 2005. The engine was overhauled in 2001 and has about 25,000 miles on it. The QUESTION: Before dropping the engine in, what should i do to it? Oil gaskets? Intake and exhaust gaskets? I plan on running the engine indefinately, so I would like it to last. Thanks!

How has it been sitting? In a truck? Covered? Or out in the open?
If it's been covered I'd just run it and see what leaks. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

I got the engine in and fired it. I runs, altho I didn't run it long as I have no radiator hoses and such on it yet. I'll run it and fix what leaks as we go. I probably should have shot oil or WD40 down the cylinders, but a friend had already been spinning it wih a breakover bar when it was hanging on the hoist ("gotta make sure she's free before we go to all the work of putting it in!"), so it was too late. (He spun it the wrong way, causing the timing belt to jump cogs, so I had to re-time the cam. Thanks alot man...) Had to crank it awhile before it would fire, probably because it had to pump up the hydraulic lash adjusters. I will put in a new thermostat and spark plugs in before driving it (too cheap of parts not to). The clutch wan't bad on the donor pickup, so I just used it. The clutch on the recieving pickup had friction material hanging out of the pressure plate whn I pulled the motor. Pretty sure is had been in there awhile. It got a carburator off of a Ford Pinto (same motor size) to get rid of the electronic carburator. All that is needed for that swap is the carb, manifold, and throttle cable bracket. The Ranger throttle cable snaps right on to the carb. I'l let ya know how it goes...

I got it all together and drove it about 100 miles. It runs as good as can be expected for having a carburator that has sat for 5 years. I'm lazy and would hate to have to overhaul it. I'll put seafoam down the carb and in the tank to see if it will clean it a little better. I did change the oil before firing it up. I will probably change it again soon (after the seafoam treatment maybe) just to make sure theres mot too many bad things flowing around in there. I will probably get a quart of ATF run thru it before the oil change too, as it sounds like it still has a hydraulic lash adjuster ticking a little. And brakes. Oh boy do I need to take a good long look at the brakes. Seems like the left front is the only brake working... I bought a master cylinder for it. I do't work monday or tuesday, so I will put it on and see what else i need (I haven't had the tires off of it yet). Pretty sure there is a brake line leaking towards the rear, in the frame rail behind the gas tank. I really hope I don't have to drop the gas tank! If I can get the brakes decent, I'm gonna take it out to the playground next weekend. I hope to get some pics of airing it out then. Gotta stretch out the twin-i-beam. Then next week i guess i will be shopping for some shocks...
