Potential New Off-Roader

Hey guys,
I'm a former city slicker who's moved to the heart of Missouri (Columbia, MO) and I've always been fascinated by off-roading and I've figured I want to get into it.
Any tips for XUV's or off-road vehicles? I've seen some new stuff from John Deere http://www.youtube.com/johndeere but are they usually into farm stuff or are they the real deal?
