New to 4 wheeling, so I don't know what to buy. It has to be towable 4-down behind our Motorhome with an automatic transmision (transfer case has to be able to go to neutral), and seating for 5. It needs to drive well on pavement the other 340 days of the year (Jeep Rubicon Unlimited, for example, was great off-road the day we tried one, but is underpowered on the highway, has a crappy 4-speed transmision, and makes everyone nauseated with poor ride on pavement). Will spend up to 50K. Considering new 2011 Grand Cherokee, but I am worried it won't be good enough even with front air dam removed to get me over difficult rocks in Moab. How good would a truck like the Chevy Avalanche work with a lift kit? Would that be a better way to go than the Grand Cherokee? Other ideas?
Thanks!

Wow. 162 views and no replies. Well, I test drove a lot of stuff. I considered just keeping our Suburban as our tow vehicle, and getting something sporty but with decent ground clearance for snow here in Utah, like the Infinity FX35. In the end, I decided to order the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee. My brother had a GC in the 1990s, and I always thought it drove and road like crap on the roads. I swore I would never own one. Well, the 2011 GC is very different. It drives surpisingly well, looks great, nice interior, lots or rear seat leg room, great towing capability for its class, and can get me just about anywhere when we go hiking in Southern Utah. I decided that on days when I want to go more crazy and try "Hells Revenge" I'll rent a jeep for $150 instead of risking denting the doors, etc, on my new car. The bummer is I have to wait 2-3 months for my car to be built. Hopefully I'll get a better idea on a build date next week. I got the Overland, with every option, for $47,000. Not bad considering the Acuras, Infinities, etc, which can't get out of a mud puddle, cost even more.

1500 4x4 suburban< 4'' lift will do, plenty of power, good transfer case,3.73 gears is all you need for family off roading, and superb ride on the highway, see if you can find a z71 suspension, we did it, no regrets at all, after we've tryied almost everything else, let us know and good luck.
