So the family has decided we want a real 4x4. We live in MI and want to hit local trails, mud, rocks, sand dunes, and at least an annual trip to Drummond Island. I need help thinking of vehicles suited for this that will fit 3 child seats. We have a 4yo, 2yo, and one on the way, so they'll all be in booster seats and various child seats which are wider than the average adult. Our current vehicle is a Honda Pilot and even that isn't wide enough to go 3 across the rear seat so we'll have to use the 3rd row when #3 gets here.
There are lots of options that seat 5, but don't necessarily hold 3 fat child seats. As of now I'm looking at LR Discoveries because of the rear jump seats and Toyota Land Cruisers because of the 3rd row. Also the Disco 1s have a center diff lock and the Yota can be found with all 3 lockers. I have seen some pretty tough Tahoes/Suburbans but I'm not aware of their reputation off road and wondered if they'd be too wide for trail use? I had a full size Bronco that I'd love to get back but loading 3 kids through a 2 door just isn't worth it.
I am looking at older rides with a budget of about $5000 to purchase and then replace/upgrade as things break. The vehicle will be street legal only for the purpose of getting us to where we want to wheel. Other than that it's off road only. There's got to be something obvious that I'm not thinking of. Suggestions?
